There was a time when I thought of myself as a poet.
Then it became clear to me I have no talent for writing poetry but perhaps I had the soul of a poet.
Then it became clear to me that I don’t have the soul of a poet either. However, I do enjoy reading poetry.
I still attempt writing it, but it’s just never very good. In fact, it’s awful. So, and enjoyer of poetry I remain.
This year on the blog, I want to observe and celebrate National Poetry Month, which is in April each year. This year is special because it is the 30th anniversary of National Poetry Month.
Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month is a special occasion that celebrates poets’ integral role in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry’s important place in our lives. I will post each day in the month of April with a link to a poetry resource or poet and one of my favorite poems. I hope it will encourage those of you who haven’t read poetry since your formal school years to pick it up once again and I hope for those of who love poetry, that this will be a way for us to enjoy it together.
